Far Cry 2 Glitch- How to Shoot, and Kill, The Jackal

2008-11-08
Far Cry 2 Glitch- How to Shoot, and Kill, The Jackal This glitch only works if you don't have any updates for your game, as after the time of this upload it's been patched for all three platforms. To get rid of updates on the Xbox 360, read this: vgstrategies.about.com This glitch lets you kill the Jackal in any way you want. It must be done when you meet The Jackal, in the prison, before you enter The Heart of Darkness. The mortar glitch was found by cod4dudes, or at least that's how I found out about it. www.youtube.com I then discovered that it could be used to kill almost anyone in any building you glitch into, including The Jackal in the prison. Far Cry 2 Walkthrough - 1st UFLL Mission - Part 1

2009-06-10
Far Cry 2 Walkthrough - 1st UFLL Mission - Part 1 This new and improved Far Cry 2 walkthrough will replace my old FC2 strategy guides which I did on the 1st UFLL mission. This walkthrough features live commentary and will be one continuous and complete play through of Act I. This is a humongous task, by the way, and will most probably be upwards of 30-35 videos. So it will be uploaded in segments over the next several weeks. I thank you for your patience. I'm trying to play other games, manage my site (majorslack.com) and run my online business all at once here. The 1st UFLL mission walkthrough is spread out over four videos. Complete running time is approx. 39 mins. I'll be putting the entire walkthrough in a playlist and building it up as I go along. Check my channel for this playlist (and subscribe while yer at it!) FEEDBACK ON VOICE SOUND QUALITY? Thanks for supporting by rating this video and leaving a comment. I read ALL comments so don't be shy. I'd particularly appreciate some feedback on the sound quality on the live commentary in these videos as I'm testing out a new mic and I'm not that happy with it. It sounds great on my gaming computer but on my workstation, my voice sounds a tad muted and muffled. What do you think? For more tips and tricks on Far Cry 2 gameplay, see this page at my site: How to Have Fun Playing Far Cry 2 majorslack.com Alright then, happy gaming! ~ Major Slack * * * * * From: MajorSlackVideos Views: 42626 159 ratings Time: 10:59 More in Gaming

iPhone 3GS Shot with 9mm and Burned

2009-08-12
iPhone 3GS Shot with 9mm and Burned I have bought all three generations of iphones on launch day, but I cannot take it any longer. In the end, it was rejection of Google Voice from the App Store that drove me to this point, but that was just the tip of the spear. Whether it is their refusal to let other gadgets such as the Palm Pre interface with itunes, or their Draconian App Store procedures...I simply cannot support them with a clear conscience, which is why I chose to end the life of my iphone in this manner instead of selling it--after all, who would want to pass on a cancer to another person? Apple may have fooled the world with their witty commercials and bright t-shirts, but they will no longer fool me. Their approach has helped them gain a sizable chunk of the PC market, but as their popularity grows, people will begin to see them for what they really are--a corporation far more "evil" than Microsoft would ever dream to be. Apple is turning consumerism into communism. Any entity that enforces such anti-competitive practices and dictates what their paying population can and cannot have without any explanation, consistency, or reason is communistic. It's wrong and I will no longer support it. calacanis.com www.youtube.com Filmed with JVC GY-HM-100u Shot with Beretta 9mm Burned with Fire Music Copyrighted: Arcade Fire, My Body Is A Cage From: Hyperplasia07 Views: 736949 4593 ratings Time: 04:43 More in Entertainment

Motorola Backflip Lands at AT&T

2010-03-09
AT&T is finally offering an Android-based smartphone. The Motorola Backflip, first shown at this year's Consumer Electronics Show, is now available from AT&T for $99.99 when you sign a new two-year contract. The Backflip gets its name from its unusual design: the keyboard flips back, so that when the phone is closed, both the keyboard and the screen are facing out. When the phone is open, you get access to the trackpad on the back of the phone; this allows you to navigate the phone without touching the screen. In addition, the Backflip can be folded into a V-shape, so you can prop it on a table to view a video or photos on its screen. Other than the design, the Backflip is very similar to the Motorola Cliq, which is available from T-Mobile. It features a 3.1-inch screen, 5-megapixel camera, and support for both Wi-Fi and 3G networks. It also features the MotoBlur interface that's found on the Cliq; Motoblur syncs information across your e-mail account, social networks, photo sharing services, and more. All of your contacts are collected in one master list, from which you can browse their activity on various sites and services and your communication history with them. While the Backflip is AT&T's first Android phone, some reports suggest that AT&T is not allowing the "full" Android experience on the phone. PCWorld.com is reporting that AT&T has disabled the option to install non-official Android apps (those not found in the Android Market) -- a feature that is commonly enabled on Android handsets. The report also says that AT&T has pre-loaded the Backflip with several of its own applications, which can't be removed with a "backdoor hack." Stay tuned for a full review of the Backflip. Sony Working on a PlayStation Phone?

2010-03-04
Sony is developing a smartphone that will be "capable of downloading and playing PlayStation games," the Wall Street Journal is reporting. Sony already is working on the phone, and it should be released later this year, the Journal says, citing "people close to the matter." Sony also is working on an iPad-like device that "blurs distinctions among a netbook, an e-reader and a PlayStation Portable, or PSP," the Journal says. Sony is looking to these new products as a way to compete with Apple, as Sony has been "threatened" by Apple's success and its growing collection of mobile devices, the report says. Stay tuned for more details. Sony Working on a PlayStation Phone? originally appeared on About.com Smartphones on Thursday, March 4th, 2010 at 14:15:59.Permalink | Comment | Email this

Apple Sues HTC: Should You Care?

2010-03-03
Apple yesterday filed suit against HTC, a company that manufactures a variety of smartphones, including Google's Nexus One. Apple's suit accuses HTC of infringing on numerous Apple patents that relate to the iPhone's user interface, architecture, and hardware, and asks for a permanent injunction that would prevent HTC from importing or selling the phones in question in the U.S. At first glance, the lawsuit may seem like a lot of legal mumbo jumbo. Or it might seem like a bit of corporate wrangling that will never affect smartphone users. But, should Apple win, this lawsuit could change what features we see in future smartphones. The patents at the center of the suit concern features such as a finger-swipe unlocking mechanism, touch-screen scrolling, and the accelerometer - features that are found on the iPhone and many Android-based phones. If Apple wins this lawsuit, will the iPhone be the only phone that's allowed to offer such features? And even if Apple doesn't win -- whether the suit is dismissed or is settled somewhere along the way -- could this lawsuit scare other smartphone manufacturers from adding new features to their own phones? I am not a lawyer and I don't fully understand the patent system. I don't know which company is right and which one is wrong in this case. But I do think it has the potential to change the way companies make smartphones, and not for the better. Android Phones Attract Male Users

2010-02-25
Think there's no gender divide in the smartphone market? Think again -- at least when it comes to Android-based smartphones. A new report from mobile ad network AdMob reveals that the vast majority of Android users are men. According to AdMob's January 2010 Mobile Metrics Report (download PDF), 73 percent of Android users are men. Meanwhile, 58 percent of webOS users and 57 percent of iPhone users are male. Why are the iPhone and Palm's webOS phones nearly equally popular with both sexes, while Android is more appealing to a male audience? I have to admit, it's not all that surprising to me. I can see the geeky nature of the Android OS, which I highlighted in my recent review of the software, appealing more to men than to women. And the ad campaign behind the Motorola Droid, one of the more popular Android-based phones, definitely has a masculine tilt to it. I do think that as more and more Android phones hit the market, we'll see the gender divide narrow somewhat. Already, Android phones are becoming more attractive --the Nexus One, for example -- is a looker. And the software itself is getting slicker and easier to use all the time. Apple Only Purging Some Adult iPhone Apps

2010-02-23
Apple made headlines last week for pulling some adult-focused iPhone apps from the App Store. Now, it's come to light that Apple has only pulled some of these types of apps, leaving others, such as a Playboy iPhone app, available. Late last week, TechCrunch learned that Apple had decided "to remove any overtly sexual content from the App Store." The site received an e-mail from Jon Atherton, the developer of an iPhone app called Wobble iBoobs, who said he had been notified on the policy change in an e-mail from Apple. Many other developers of similar iPhone apps reported the same thing: that Apple had pulled their apps from the App Store. Philip Schiller, Apple's head of worldwide product marketing, told the New York Times that the decision was made in response to complaints from users. "It came to the point where we were getting customer complaints from women who found the content getting too degrading and objectionable, as well as parents who were upset with what their kids were able to see." Yet, today, it's been widely reported than many adult-focused apps remain in the App Store. MacWorld reported that many apps from well-known publishers, including the Playboy app and the Sports Illustrated app, which includes many pictures from the magazine's swimsuit issue, remain. PCWorld, meanwhile, rounded up a longer list of adult-oriented titles, including ones with names like Girl Zoomer and Adult Sex Life, that remain available. It remains to be seen whether Apple will clarify its policy on these types of apps. Stay tuned. Palm Pixi Plus Review: Better, But Not Perfect

2010-02-20
If not for the small Verizon logo above the screen, it would be very easy to mistake the Palm Pixi Plus for the original Palm Pixi. These two smartphones share the same slim design and the same sleek feel. On the inside, though, the Palm Pixi Plus offers two very important updates: support for Wi-Fi networks, as well as the ability to be used as a mobile hotspot for connecting other devices to the Internet. That's the good news. So, what's the bad news? For one, the Pixi Plus can be sluggish. And its camera could use some improvement. For more details, and to find out if this is the smartphone for you, read my full review of the Palm Pixi Plus from Verzion Wireless. Symbian OS Gets a Much-Needed Overhaul

2010-02-17
Microsoft isn't the only company launching a new operating system at this week's Mobile World Congress. The Symbian Foundation is getting in on the action, too, announcing Symbian^3, an open-source platform designed to revive the aging Symbian software. The new OS, which the Symbian Foundation is calling S^3, is an entirely open platform that will offer "significant usability and interface advances, faster networking, acceleration for 2D and 3D graphics in games and applications, HDMI support, music store integration, an improved user interface with easier navigation and multi-touch gesture support, a feature-rich homescreen, and the ability to run even more applications simultaneously." The Symbian OS is in need of a drastic overhaul; its current version is aging, something that's evident when you use it. Whether the S^3 platform's new features can bring it up to the standard set by today's best mobile platforms, such as the iPhone OS and Palm's webOS, remains to be seen. The software has already been made available to phone manufactures and application developers, Symbian says, noting that the platform will be "feature complete" by the end of Q1. Phones running on the software are expected by the third quarter. HTC Unveils Android, Windows Mobile Phones

2010-02-16
HTC continues to roll out high-end smartphones, announcing three new handsets at the Mobile World Congress in Barcelona this week. HTC also showed off an updated version of its HTC Sense user interface. HTC's new phones include two Android-based models -- Desire and Legend -- as well as one Windows Mobile-based handset, the HD Mini. The HD Mini (pictured above) is a smaller version of the HD2, which HTC unveiled at last month's Consumer Electronics Show. Where the HD2 features a huge 4.3-inch screen, the Mini features a 3.2-inch display. The HTC Mini features version 6.5 of the Windows Mobile operating system, not the brand-new Windows Phone 7 Series software that was just announced this week. HTC did say that it will offer Windows Phone 7-based devices later this year. Both the HTC Desire and HTC Legend are Android-based smartphones. The Legend (pictured, left) is similar to HTC's popular Hero smartphone, and features a 3.2-inch AMOLED touch-screen. The Desire, meanwhile, is similar to Google's Nexus One smartphone, which is manufactured by HTC. The Desire sports a 3.7-inch AMOLED touch-screen with a 480-by-800 pixel resolution. Both the Legend and the Desire (pictured, right) feature what HTC calls "optical joysticks" for navigation, instead of rolling trackballs. These optical joysticks are similar to the optical trackpads found on newer BlackBerry models. All of the new phones will feature the updated version of HTC's Sense user interface. Sense now features a social network aggregator widget, called HTC Friend Stream. It will pull in updates from sites like Facebook, Flickr, and Twitter, delivering what HTC calls a "continuous flow of information." HTC says the revamped version of Sense also offers a new leap feature that allows you to view thumbnails of your seven home page screens. The Legend and Desire will be available in Europe in Q2, and the HTC Mini will be available in Europe and Asia this spring. HTC has not said whether any of the phones will be available in the U.S. Images © HTC HTC Unveils Android, Windows Mobile Phones originally appeared on About.com Smartphones on Tuesday, February 16th, 2010 at 14:36:33.Permalink | Comment | Email this

It's Official: Microsoft Unveils Windows Phone 7 Series

2010-02-15
Well, that didn't take long: On the first day of the Mobile World Congress trade show in Barcelona, Microsoft officially announced Windows Phone 7 Series, the next version of its smartphone operating system. Windows Phone 7 is more than just an upgraded version of the current Windows Mobile OS; it has been rebuilt from the ground up, Microsoft says."There's no question that a year and a half ago we had to rethink everything," Microsoft CEO Steve Ballmer said during a press conference announcing the new OS. Windows Phone 7 features a completely redesigned interface, as well as new organizational system built around "hubs." The interface, which is primarily designed for use on touch-screen phones, features a series of tiles that can serve as shortcuts to apps, Web pages, or social networks that you use often. The hubs, meanwhile, are designed to "bring together related content from the Web, applications and services into a single view to simplify common tasks," Microsoft says. Windows Phone 7 includes six hubs, with the following themes: People, Pictures, Games, Music + Video, Marketplace, and Office. The Games hub offers what Microsoft says is the "first and only official Xbox LIVE experience on a phone, including Xbox LIVE games, Spotlight feed and the ability to see a gamer's avatar, Achievements and gamer profile." The Music + Video hub, meanwhile, "brings the best of Zune, including content from a user's PC, online music services, and even a built-in FM radio into one simple place that is all about music and video," Microsoft says. Phones running the new operating system will be available by the 2010 holiday season, Microsoft says. Best Smartphones

2010-03-10
Smartphones are everywhere you look, it seems. But not all smartphones are created equal. Here's a list of today's 10 best smartphones. Some have touchscreens, some have keyboards. Some have both. Read on to find out which phones make the list of today's best smartphones.

What Is a Smartphone

2010-03-10
You probably hear the term "smartphone" tossed around a lot. But if you've ever wondered exactly what a smartphone is, well, you're not alone. How is a smartphone different than a cell phone, and what makes it so smart? A smartphone is a device that lets you make telephone calls, but also adds in features that you might find on a personal digital assistant or a computer--such as the ability to send and receive e-mail and edit Office documents, for example.

Apple iPhone 3GS Review

iPhone 3G Service Plans

2010-03-10
A new iPhone 3G may be cheaper than the first-generation iPhone, but in the long run, the price of the iPhone 3G will be higher. That's because the phone's service plan is more expensive. The price of an iPhone 3G with 8GB of storage is $199; a first-generation iPhone with the same amount of storage cost $399 at its cheapest. So why is the price of an iPhone 3G higher?

LG Voyager Review

2010-03-10
The LG Voyager doesn't force you to give up the comfort of a QWERTY keyboard to get slick touch-screen technology. While other touch-screen smartphones, like Apple's iPhone, force you to use the screen for all data entry, the Voyager includes a keyboard, too.

AT&T completes 100-Gigabit Ethernet field trial using new Cisco gear, proves it does care

2010-03-11
Remember those network investments that AT&T was talking up just days before Time Warner slipped over an offer for help? Looks as if the firm wasn't kidding around, but there's still nothing here that should get you excited about more available bandwidth in the coming days. Utilizing that fancy new Cisco router, the carrier recently completed a live network environmental trial of 100-Gigabit backbone network technology (far more hasty than that 40-Gigabit stuff that's around today), but we're told that the tech isn't expected to be ready for "commercial deployment" until the "next few years." 'Course, we suspect we should be struck by the notion that the internet may actually have the proper infrastructure to keep on keepin' on once Hulu really does take over the world, but for now, we'll just have to extract a bit more joy from those vague "little things" in life.AT&T completes 100-Gigabit Ethernet field trial using new Cisco gear, proves it does care originally appeared on Engadget on Thu, 11 Mar 2010 05:28:00 EST. HTC Touch Pro 2 gets a new lease of Android life, loves it (video)

2010-03-11
Android for Windows phones -- simple concept, simple enough installation, but awesome results. The good people behind the XDAndroid project have been working hard to allow you to get your Google juices flowing nice and freely on your WinMo device and the latest build looks to have all but completed the task. Demonstrated on a Touch Pro 2 -- a phone that recently got itself Ubuntu-ized -- the Android installation experiences no difficulty in making calls, sending SMS or email missives, or browsing the web. There are still limitations, mind you, with GPS, Bluetooth and "other key functions" not yet available, but for the most part you're looking at the full Android experience on devices that weren't initially meant for it. Check it out on video after the break or hit the source link for detailed instructions on how to load this up on your own phone. PRS Guitarbud jacks your axe, ego into iPhone / iPod touch

2010-03-11
Whatever happened to that dreamy Line 6 / Apple tie-up? Who knows, right? While those two sort out their future behind the scenes, Paul Reed Smith Guitars is stepping up to take advantage of an obvious market opportunity. The newly announced Guitarbud is a simplistic accessory that allows axe slingers to jack their guitar into an iPhone or second-generation iPod touch, all while providing a headphone output in order to keep the noise making to yourself. We're told that the device works with pretty much any recording-supported app (even Apple's own Voice Memos), though PRS obviously recommends that you check out its JamApp guitar amp simulator / tuner / training tool. Best of all, it's available today for £29.95 (or $29.95 here in the States), putting you just a few yard mowings away from securing your own personal aural sanctuary. Too bad the reviews from early adopters aren't so promising...PRS Guitarbud jacks your axe, ego into iPhone / iPod touch originally appeared on Engadget on Thu, 11 Mar 2010 04:19:00 EST. Verizon promises first 4G handset for next summer, foretells end of unlimited data plans

2010-03-11
Alright, you ultrafast mobile broadband zealots, whip out your calendars and draw a big red tick around the middle of 2011. Verizon's CTO Anthony Melone has identified next summer as the carrier's release window for its first LTE handset, which should be preceded by the 4G service being rolled out by the end of this year. If you're wondering what you'll be using on that "faster than 3G" network while waiting for the vanguard handset, we saw plenty of LTE-equipped gear at CES and let's not forget about that 1080p-decodin' NVIDIA tablet that was teased during the show. The one bit of bogus news from Melone was the statement that contracts with "as much data as you can consume is the big issue that has to change." Verizon seems resolutely set on introducing some type of tiered or metered price plans, which is unfortunately the same path AT&T is headed down. The message from the networks is therefore clear: with great (downloading) power comes great (bill-paying) responsibility.Verizon promises first 4G handset for next summer, foretells end of unlimited data plans originally appeared on Engadget on Thu, 11 Mar 2010 03:45:00 EST. Nokia Symbian^3 UI demonstrated in detail, seeks multitouch devices (video)

2010-03-11
Nokia VP, David Rivas, was in San Francisco yesterday touting Symbian^3 improvements. While we've heard and seen plenty about Symbian Three's enhanced user experience already, it's still worthy of another look considering Symbian's dominant marketshare. Besides, David provides a very detailed look as he walks us though elements like the customizable (and more finger friendly) homescreens meant to provide quick access to call features and at-a-glance data. Rivas also reiterates speed improvement claims over existing S60 5th devices (about a 3x improvement in graphics performance) that should "very very pleasantly surprise" users. Naturally, a faster UI coupled with a Symbian device running on something better than ARM 11 will also help here -- Nokia's only Cortex A8 device is the N900 running Maemo, not Symbian. David takes a veiled shot at Microsoft's new WP7 platform when discussing Symbian's true multitaking capabilities without any "tricks" -- apps are actually running in the background, not just freezing their state until you return. Multitouch screen control on capacitive and resistive (really?) touchscreen displays with Cover Flow-like album art navigation? Yup, it's all in there, as are hundreds of usability improvements (and fewer nags!) that should bring Symbian^3 up to the level of what everyone expects from a modern smartphone, according to Rivas. In other words, we'll have to wait for S^4 on early 2011 devices to see any real innovation. While the live demo was run on a laptop, we suspect it won't be long until Nokia starts showing off its live OS on a production handset. Until then, check the video after the break -- it's all we've got. [Thanks, Rafael C.]Continue reading Nokia Symbian^3 UI demonstrated in detail, seeks multitouch devices (video)Nokia Symbian^3 UI demonstrated in detail, seeks multitouch devices (video) originally appeared on Engadget on Thu, 11 Mar 2010 03:05:00 EST. PrimeSense talks full-body motion control at GDC, gives us a video demonstration

2010-03-11
PrimeSense was formed in 2005, and unless you're a sickly obsessed silicon junkie, you've probably never heard of them. All that changes today. We sat down with the company at GDC to learn more about the chip that it produces, and we left with an imagination sore from being stretched so severely. Put simply, the company manufacturers a microchip that, when paired with off-the-shelf optics, can create a 3D grid that a computer can understand. The purpose here, as you can likely glean, is to enable PlayStation Eye-like interactions, or as the company suggests, a "more natural" way to interface with devices you use every day. Rather than grabbing the remote to switch channels or snapping up that HTPC keyboard in order to flip through your stored DVD library, PrimeSense would rather you kick back on the sofa and gently flick your hands in order to turn to this week's Gossip Girl or sort through those classic horror flicks. Gallery: PrimeSense press photos It's important to remember that PrimeSense isn't in the business of creating hardware, but today we were shown a reference design that looks an awful lot like an enlarged webcam. The device is completely USB powered, and while the unit shown in the images and video here was obviously a standalone device, we were told that it would be possible to integrate the solution into displays and the like in the future. They also mentioned that the depth location -- which enables it to map out a room and detect your entire body -- was done on-chip, with only the associated middleware taxing the CPU. Still, they've had success running this on Atom-level processors, so there's certainly no big horsepower hang-up preventing it from hitting up a variety of markets. More after the break... Intel's Core i7-980X Extreme Edition 'Gulftown' review roundup

2010-03-10
Six cores. Twelve threads. A new flagship processor in Intel's stable. Here at GDC in San Francisco, the world's most widely recognized chip maker is dishing out its latest desktop CPU, and to say it's a niche device would be greatly understating things. We spoke to a number of Intel bigwigs at tonight's media event, and everyone confessed that the Core i7-980X Extreme Edition was a low quantity, high performance device aimed specifically at gamers and content editors that simply refuse to live anywhere other than on the cutting edge. Intel's planning on selling these in retail, standalone form for $999 (MSRP), while they'll soon be available in a variety of gaming rigs from the likes of Dell, Alienware and whoever else wishes to keep with the times. As for Apple? The company stated that Steve and Company "sort of call their own shots," and that we'd have to dig at Apple if we really wanted to know what their refreshed Mac Pro would hold. We chuckled, nodded in understanding, and then learned that this here slab of silicon is a bit ahead of the software out there, with Intel noting that only games optimized for 12-thread use and benchmarking utilities that did likewise would really demonstrate the performance boost. 'Course, anyone who spends a great deal of time multitasking will appreciate the extra headroom, and power users can always find ways to make use of more horsepower. Oh, and for what it's worth, the company stated that this will be its lead desktop chip for some time to come, and if you're looking for a mobile version in the near future, you can keep dreaming. As for the critics? Just about everyone with a benchmarking license managed to get one of these in-house, and everyone seems to feel (mostly) the same way. There's no denying that this is Intel's speediest consumer chip ever, but you won't find 50 percent boosts just anywhere. Yet. When the software catches up, though, there's no doubt that this chip will make even the other Core i7s look downright sluggish. 50 percent more cores and 50 percent more threads than the prior kings of the line leads to fantastic gains when serious number crunching is involved (audio and video editors, we're staring at you), with some tests showing upticks in the 30 to 50 percent range. As a bonus, the power consumption here is also extremely reasonable, with the shift to 32nm enabling it to even use less power in some circumstances when compared to the Core i7-975 Extreme Edition. Dig into the glut of reviews below if you've got a cool grand with "chip upgrade" written on it -- you'll be glad you did. PlayStation Move first hands-on (update: video!)

2010-03-10
At last, we've felt Sony's long awaited motion controller, now at last officially known as "PlayStation Move," in our unworthy, sweaty hands. We have a bunch of videos on the way, but for now you can revel in our first close-ups of the controllers in the gallery below. Here are some of our initial thoughts: The controllers are light. Much more akin to the DualShock3 than the Wiimote in heft, and we're guessing that's due to Sony's continued love of rechargeable batteries. The main controller does have some subtle vibration (not DualShock or Wiimote level, but present), but we're not sure yet about the subcontroller. We hate to say this about "pre-alpha" software, but we're feeling lag. An on-rails shooter we tried out, dubbed The Shoot, was discernibly inferior to shooting experiences we've had on the Wii, both in precision and refresh rate of the aiming cursor. The gladiator game is about as fun as it looks, we'll have video after the break momentarily. Unfortunately, while it's less of a defined experience than something like the sword game on Wii Sports Resort, you're still working through a library of sensed, pre-defined actions instead of a true 1:1 fighting game with simulated physics. Not that it isn't possible with PlayStation Move, just that it's not this. The lightness of the controllers means we might be feeling less of that Wiimote fatigue, always a good thing! There's an aspect of the controller that feels a little cheap, but at the same time we wouldn't call it fragile. As far as we can tell, the control scheme for Socom 4 is quite similar to dual-controller shooter setups on the Wii, with the camera moving based on your aiming cursor hitting the edge. It's hard to see this as the preferred hardcore setup, but we're told it's configurable, so we'll try and see what else is on offer. The system seemed to have a bit of trouble understanding the configuration of our body in a swordfighting stance: even though we selected "left handed," it was putting our sword arm forward instead of our shield. Right-handers didn't seem to have similar problems, and we're sure this will be ironed out in time, but it certainly shows that the controllers aren't magical in their space-detection prowess. As would be expected, you're supposed to stand relatively center on the TV, and at a certain optimal distance. The system is forgiving, but there's a sweet spot that users will undoubtedly have to learn. Lag is less prominent on Socom 4, and we'd say we're pretty accurate with the controller already, though the framerate choppiness of this pre-alpha build obviously hampers that a bit. We did get a slight feel of being in "scene to scene" shootouts instead of a free-roaming FPS, perhaps a design choice to mitigate the limited camera movement offered by the controller, but we'll have to see more levels to know for sure. Update: We added in a longer video -- are you ready for three minutes of nonstop excitement? Update, final edition: We've got a new video with close-up walkthroughs of the controllers and some in-depth gameplay of Socom 4. HTML5 vs. Flash comparison finds a few surprises, settles few debates

2010-03-10
Think we'd all be better off if HTML5 could somehow instantly replace Flash overnight? Not necessarily, according to a set of comparisons from Jan Ozer of the Streaming Learning Center website, which found that while HTML5 did come out ahead in many respects, it wasn't exactly a clear winner. The tests weren't completely scientific, but they did find that HTML5 clearly performed better than Flash 10 or 10.1 in Safari on a Mac, although the differences were less clear cut in Google Chrome or Firefox. On the other hand, Flash more than held its own on Windows, and Flash Player 10.1 was actually 58% more efficient than HTML5 in Google Chrome on the Windows system tested. As you may have deduced, one of the big factors accounting for that discrepancy is that Flash is able to take advantage of GPU hardware acceleration in Windows, while Adobe is effectively cut out of the loop on Mac -- something it has complained about quite publicly. According to Ozer, the differences between HTML5 and Flash playback on a Mac could be virtually eliminated if Flash could make use of GPU acceleration. Hit up the link below for all the numbers.HTML5 vs. Flash comparison finds a few surprises, settles few debates originally appeared on Engadget on Wed, 10 Mar 2010 23:36:00 EST. Pioneer DJM-2000 digital mixer sports multitouch screen, per-frequency mixing delight

2010-03-10
Ready to graduate from DJ Hero? Got a house payment handy? Then Pioneer would like to show you the way to the pros. Say hello to the DJM-2000, a four-channel digital mixer built around a 5.8-inch multitouch screen and sporting enough knobs, buttons and sliders for a NASA launch sequence. Designed to play nice with the matching CDJ-2000 players Pioneer released last year, the unit features an integrated audio effects suite with six dedicated processors and several intriguing modes for multitouch music control. While the mixer has the traditional crossfade slider that allows DJs to assign a certain percentage of the output to channels on the left and right, the DJM-2000 debuts with "frequency mix," a mode that lets DJs assign within seven narrow frequency bands as well by manipulating virtual sliders on the touchscreen, and a "sidechain remix" mode that uses the screen to apply custom effects in real time. Yeah, it's not as wild as some other touchscreen DJ rigs we've seen, but at least this one's for sale: Pioneer says the mixer will retail for $3000 this June. Motorola partners with Microsoft, will use Bing search and maps on Chinese Android phones

2010-03-10
digg_url = 'http://digg.com/gadgets/Motorola_s_Android_phones_to_use_Bing_search_in_China'; Uh, whoa. When we heard Google's threatened pullout of China had prompted Motorola to seek out an alternative search provider for its China-bound handsets, we can't say we were expecting a partnership with Microsoft to result. But here we are, staring at a press release announcing the Bing search and Maps will be the default on Moto's Chinese Android phones starting in Q1 -- and the partnership is described as "global," so there's a chance it could spread. That's just one more slap in Google's face from Moto, following the release of the Yahoo-powered AT&T Backflip -- and another step away from the tight relationship that produced the Droid. And does this mean Motorola might yet build a Windows Phone 7 Series device, despite a very public commitment to Android? We'd say Eric and Sanjay have some unresolved differences to work through.Motorola partners with Microsoft, will use Bing search and maps on Chinese Android phones originally appeared on Engadget on Wed, 10 Mar 2010 21:33:00 EST. PlayStation Move motion controller launched at GDC, starter kit to be under $100 with game

2010-03-10
digg_url = 'http://digg.com/playstation/PlayStation_Move_motion_controller_launched_at_GDC'; No surprise here: Sony just officially announced the PlayStation Move motion controller at GDC 2010, calling it the "next generation of motion gaming" because it's so precise -- latency is about the same as the DualShock 3. As expected, it uses the PlayStation Eye camera to track the controller, and Sony says it becomes an "extension of your body." The plan is not only to engage casual gamers, but to use the precision of the controller to create "new experiences for core gamers" -- many of the demo videos we saw involved using a controller video in each hand, and there were quote a few demos of action / RPG games. We also saw a demo of Move Party, which uses the camera to do augmented reality gaming and video chat. The demos are pretty impressive -- Sony's not kidding when it says the Move is incredibly precise. There's also going to be a secondary "subcontroller" with an analog stick for shooters -- you can play all the way through SOCOM4 with just the Move and the sub-controller. (Yes, it's just like the Wii Nunchuk, only wireless.) You'll be able to get Move in three ways: in a bundle with a PS3, standalone, and in a starter kit targeted at "under $100" with the PS Eye, a controller, and a game. That's all the pricing info we have right now, but it certainly sounds aggressive -- Sony says they're treating this like a major console launch, so expect to see this everywhere when it launches around the holidays. Video after the break. Update: The European PlayStation Blog says some games will come bundled with Move as well. Check out our hands-on right here! iPhone and iPod touch: What to do when applications close unexpectedly while in use

2010-03-01
Applications on iPhone or iPod touch may close unexpectedly because the device has begun to run low on application memory. This does not mean there is too much data stored on the device, but simply means that it is running too many memory-intensive tasks. Some examples of this issue: If you have many Safari web pages open on your iPhone or iPod touch, Safari may close and the iPhone or iPod touch will go back to the Home screen (where it shows all the application icons). When listening to music or podcasts, watch video, etc. playback may stop and the device may return to the Home screen. Overview of syncing iPhone or iPod touch with your computer

2010-02-24
This article gives an overview of how to set up iPhone or iPod touch to sync with your computer, and where to get additional information. When you connect iPhone or iPod touch to your computer, items are automatically synced according to your preferences set in iTunes. You can, for example, enter phone numbers and addresses of friends and family members on your computer, connect iPhone or iPod touch to sync, then unplug iPhone or iPod touch and tap a friend's name on the touchscreen to call. You can sync Contacts—names, phone numbers, addresses, email addresses, and so on Calendars—appointments and events Notes (sync with Mac OS X Mail or Microsoft Outlook)* Web bookmarks Music and audiobooks Photos Podcasts Movies and TV shows Applications Ringtones (iPhone only) iTunes U content * Syncing is over USB only and on a Mac requires Mac OS X 10.5.7 or later. You only need to set which items are synced in iTunes on your computer once. After that, just connect iPhone or iPod touch to start a sync. Contacts, calendars, notes, and bookmarks are synced from (or to) your computer, so if you add, change, or delete them on iPhone or iPod touch, they are changed on your computer, and vice versa. You can also sync contacts with your Yahoo! or Google Address Book. Email account settings (on iPhone only), music, movies, TV shows, podcasts, and photos are synced one-way, from your computer to iPhone (though you can import photos taken with iPhone to your computer). If you like, you can set iPhone or iPod touch to sync with only a portion of what's on your computer. For example, you might want to sync only a group of contacts from your address book, or you may want to sync only songs from certain playlists so you don't fill up iPhone or iPod touch with all your music.
